What electrical work is notifiable under Part P in England?
Regulation 12(6A) of the Building Regulations 2010 lists three things: installing a new circuit, replacing a consumer unit, and any addition or alteration to existing circuits in a special location. The special locations are the space around a bath or shower (0.6 m from the bath or tray, up to 2.25 m high) and a room containing a swimming pool or sauna heater. Kitchens and gardens are not special locations in England.
Is the Part P list different in Wales?
Yes. The Welsh Approved Document P still treats work in kitchens, and special installations such as outdoor lighting and power, solar PV and floor heating, as notifiable. In large bathrooms the location is defined by the walls of the room.
How long does a registered competent person have to notify building control?
Approved Document P paragraph 3.4: within 30 days of completing the work, the installer or their registration body must give the occupier a copy of the Building Regulations compliance certificate and give building control the certificate or its information.
