Employed Electrician Rates — JIB Scale 2026
The Joint Industry Board (JIB) sets national pay rates for the electrical contracting industry. The rates below are the National Standard, Transport Provided figures effective Monday 5 January 2026 — the headline column, and the one usually quoted. Own Transport rates are slightly higher and Shop Employed rates lower. These are minimum rates — Bristol employers, particularly on commercial and industrial projects, routinely pay above the JIB scale.
Trainee Electrician — Stage 1 / Electrical Labourer £14.60 per hour, Stage 2 £16.54 per hour, Stage 3 £17.51 per hour. This is a separate grade family from the apprentice Stages, which run from £8.16 to £14.03 per hour during the apprenticeship itself.
Electrician (including Domestic) — £18.38 per hour (£35,840 per year at 37.5hr/week). Holds NVQ Level 3 and ECS Blue Card. Many Bristol employers start staff at this grade while gaining experience for ECS Gold Card application.
Approved Electrician — £20.08 per hour (£39,150 per year at 37.5hr/week). ECS Gold Card holder. The most common grade on Bristol commercial sites. Bristol market rate often £23 to £26 per hour above JIB minimum.
Site or Installation Technician — £22.70 per hour (£44,265 per year). The top grade on the JIB scale. Common in Bristol's aerospace and instrumentation sectors.
Responsibility money — an Approved Electrician placed in charge of work and supervising other operatives receives responsibility money on top of the grade rate: not less than 50p and not more than £2 per hour. Supervising apprentices or trainees alone does not qualify. Bristol market rates for gang leaders often run to £25 to £28 per hour, with site allowances adding further.
All JIB rates include holiday pay entitlement of 23 working days per year (rising to 24 days after five years' service). JIB also provides access to death-in-service benefit and the JIB Welfare Plan, which includes health and wellbeing support.

Self-Employed Electrician Day Rates in Bristol
Self-employment is popular among Bristol electricians, with many moving to self-employed status after gaining five or more years of experience. Day rates vary significantly by sector and specialism.
Domestic work — £350 to £550 per day. Consumer unit changes, rewires, extensions, kitchen and bathroom circuits. Higher rates in Bristol's affluent areas (Clifton, Redland, Westbury on Trym).
Small commercial — £400 to £600 per day. Offices, retail units, restaurants. Bristol's hospitality and retail sector on Whiteladies Road, Clifton Village, and the harbourside demands reliable commercial electricians.
Large commercial and industrial — £500 to £750 per day. Major construction sites, factories, distribution centres. Bristol's growth corridor along the M4/M5 junction has a substantial industrial park and logistics hub demand.
Specialist and tech sector — £550 to £900 per day. Aerospace, data centres, pharmaceutical, cleanrooms. Airbus at Filton, Leonardo, and BAE Systems sites drive some of the highest day rates in the South West of England.
After deducting public liability insurance (£400 to £800 per year), tool insurance, vehicle costs, professional subscriptions, and corporation or income tax, self-employed Bristol electricians typically net 55 to 65% of gross earnings. Good quote management, fast invoicing, and minimal wasted time between jobs are critical to maximising take-home pay.

How Bristol's Technology Economy Drives Electrician Pay
Bristol's status as one of the UK's leading technology and aerospace hubs has a direct and significant effect on electrician earnings in the city. Companies with exacting technical requirements pay premium rates to attract and retain qualified electricians.
Aerospace cluster (Filton) — Airbus, Leonardo, BAE Systems, and GKN Aerospace at Filton are among the largest employers in the Bristol area. Electrical maintenance, instrumentation, and project work at these sites commands day rates of £600 to £900 for suitably experienced and security-cleared electricians.
Data centres — Bristol hosts several hyperscale and colocation data centres. Critical systems electricians with UPS, PDU, and generator experience are in persistent high demand at rates of £500 to £750 per day.
University research facilities — the University of Bristol and University of the West of England run major research programmes requiring specialist electrical installation in laboratories. Clean, precise, technically demanding work at £450 to £650 per day.
Renewable energy — Bristol's commitment to net zero and its position as the UK's first European Green Capital drives demand for solar PV and EV charging installation. Day rates of £400 to £600 for MCS-certified installers.

Stage 1 — £8.16 per hour. Approximately £15,900 per year at 37.5 hours per week. Adult entrants to electrical apprenticeships are increasingly common in Bristol.
Stage 2 — £10.60 per hour. Approximately £20,670 per year.
