Sample questions

  1. 01For Mode 1 charging, what is the most the standardised socket-outlet at the supply end may be rated at?
    • A32 A
    • B63 A
    • C16 A
    • D13 A

Why: Mode 1 uses a standardised socket-outlet rated at no more than 16 A, with only line, neutral and protective earth to the car. 32 A is the limit for Mode 2, which adds the in-cable control box. 13 A is the usual UK socket-outlet rating, not the Mode 1 limit, and 63 A belongs to the Type 2 accessory ratings.

  2. 02The control box built into a Mode 2 lead is a product in its own right. What is it, and which standard covers it?
    • AAn IC-CPD, covered by IEC 62752
    • BA Mode 3 controller, to IEC 61851-1
    • CAn EV socket, to BS EN IEC 62196-2
    • DAn RDC-DD, made to BS IEC 62955

Why: The in-cable control and protection box is an IC-CPD, covered by IEC 62752 rather than IEC 61851-1. An RDC-DD to BS IEC 62955 is a device for DC fault detection, which is the tempting mix-up because both deal with protection. BS EN IEC 62196-2 covers plugs and socket-outlets, not the box.

  3. 03A customer says the 22 kW AC unit at work must be Mode 4 because it charges so quickly. What is the accurate reply?
    • AMode 1, because the car does its own conversion
    • BMode 4, because anything over 11 kW counts as rapid
    • CMode 3, as Mode 4 means an off-board DC charger
    • DMode 2, because three-phase leads carry a control box

Why: Mode is not about speed. A three-phase AC unit with the control pilot in fixed equipment is Mode 3, and the car converts the AC with its on-board charger. Mode 4 means an off-board charger supplying DC, whatever its power. The car converts AC in Modes 1, 2 and 3, so that does not make a unit Mode 1.
