Sample questions

  1. 01What is the correct compression-to-breath ratio for adult CPR?
    • A.30 compressions to 1 breath
    • B.30 compressions to 2 breaths
    • C.20 compressions to 2 breaths
    • D.15 compressions to 2 breaths

Why: The Resuscitation Council UK recommends 30 chest compressions followed by 2 rescue breaths for adult CPR. This ratio applies whether there is one rescuer or two. It maximises coronary perfusion while still providing ventilation.

  2. 02How do you recognise cardiac arrest in a casualty?
    • A.They have a weak pulse and are confused
    • B.They are breathing rapidly and clutching their chest
    • C.They are pale and sweating
    • D.They are unresponsive and not breathing normally

Why: Cardiac arrest is recognised when a person is unresponsive and not breathing normally. You should not spend time trying to find a pulse as this is unreliable. If in doubt, start CPR immediately.

  3. 03What is the recommended depth of chest compressions for an adult?
    • A.3–4 cm
    • B.5–6 cm
    • C.2–3 cm
    • D.7–8 cm

Why: Chest compressions for an adult should depress the sternum by 5–6 cm. Compressions that are too shallow are ineffective at generating blood flow. Allow the chest to fully recoil between each compression.
