Key Takeaways

  • 1ChatGPT and Gemini are general-purpose AI assistants. They can discuss electrical topics but lack deep BS 7671 knowledge and frequently produce inaccurate regulation references. Elec-Mate AI is purpose-built for UK electrical work.
  • 2Elec-Mate AI includes 8 specialist agents — Circuit Designer, Cost Engineer, Installation Guide, Commissioning Specialist, Maintenance Agent, Health & Safety, Fault Finder, and Regulation Lookup — each trained on electrical industry data.
  • 3The AI Board Scanner lets you photograph a consumer unit and automatically extract circuit data. No general-purpose AI can do this with electrical-trade accuracy.
  • 4The AI Cost Engineer uses real UK trade pricing data and labour timing intelligence to produce accurate job estimates. ChatGPT and Gemini can only guess at pricing.
  • 5Elec-Mate AI integrates directly with certificates, calculators, and business tools. ChatGPT and Gemini are standalone chat interfaces with no trade tool integration.

Why AI Matters for Electricians

AI is not about replacing electricians. It is about eliminating the admin, calculations, and paperwork that eat into your productive time. Circuit design that takes 45 minutes manually can be drafted in under 5 minutes with a specialist AI agent. RAMS documents that take an hour to write from scratch can be generated in seconds. Job costings that require cross-referencing trade catalogues can be produced instantly using real pricing data.

The question is not whether to use AI, but which AI. General-purpose chatbots like ChatGPT and Gemini know something about everything but lack the deep, verified knowledge needed for safety-critical electrical work. See our AI Electrician Hub for a deeper look at trade-specific AI.

The Contenders

Elec-Mate AI — 8 specialist AI agents and 12 AI-powered tools built exclusively for UK electricians. Trained on BS 7671:2018+A4:2026, GN3, On-Site Guide, and real UK trade pricing data. Integrated with certificates, calculators, and business tools. Includes a dedicated AI Circuit Designer and AI Cost Engineer. From £6.99/month.

ChatGPT (OpenAI) — The world's most popular general-purpose AI assistant. Capable of discussing a wide range of topics including some electrical knowledge. No specific training on BS 7671 or UK electrical regulations. No integration with trade tools. Free tier available with usage limits; Plus plan from around £16/month.

Google Gemini — Google's general-purpose AI assistant. Strong at research and summarisation. Some awareness of electrical topics via web training data. No specific training on UK wiring regulations. No trade tool integration. Free tier available; Advanced plan from around £19/month.

BS 7671 Accuracy: The Critical Difference

Electrical work is safety-critical. An AI that gives incorrect regulation references or miscalculates cable sizes is not just unhelpful — it is potentially dangerous. This is where general-purpose AI falls short.

ChatGPT and Gemini have general awareness of electrical concepts from their web training data, but they frequently produce regulation numbers that do not exist, confuse different editions of BS 7671, and lack knowledge of Amendment 4 (A4:2026) which added Regulation 530.3.201 — requiring the installer to determine whether a protective device should be unidirectional or bidirectional wherever a supply can be connected to either side, such as solar PV, battery storage or vehicle-to-load. When asked specific questions about Zs limits, cable grouping factors, or disconnection times, they often hallucinate values that are close but incorrect — the most dangerous kind of error.

Elec-Mate AI is trained on the complete BS 7671:2018+A4:2026 standard, GN3 (Guidance Note 3: Inspection and Testing), and the On-Site Guide. Its responses reference specific regulation numbers, table values, and appendix data that have been verified against the source material. It also integrates with over 70 BS 7671 calculators, so you can verify AI suggestions with actual calculations.

What BS 7671 A4:2026 actually added — and why ChatGPT cannot answer these

  • Reg 411.3.4 — AC final circuits supplying luminaires in domestic premises must now have additional protection by a 30 mA RCD. Ask ChatGPT whether your new lighting circuit needs RCD protection under A4:2026 and it will not give a reliable answer.
  • Reg 421.1.7 — Arc fault detection devices (AFDDs) are now recommended on AC final circuits of a fixed installation to mitigate fire risk. General AI tools conflate recommendation with requirement and frequently misattribute which edition introduced this.
  • Reg 643.8 (RCD testing) — A4:2026 changed how RCDs are tested: regardless of RCD type, a single AC test at the rated residual operating current (IΔn) now verifies effectiveness — a general non-delay RCD must disconnect within 300 ms — and the old Appendix 3 Table 3A tripping-time criteria were deleted. A general chatbot will still quote the withdrawn test method.

Verdict

The Verdict

ChatGPT and Gemini are impressive general-purpose AI tools. They are useful for drafting emails, summarising documents, brainstorming ideas, and answering general questions. For non-electrical tasks, they are excellent. Some electricians use them for writing marketing content, replying to customer enquiries, or planning business strategy.

For actual electrical work — circuit design, regulation compliance, job costing, RAMS generation, fault diagnosis, and installation guidance — Elec-Mate AI is in a different category. It is the only AI tool that combines deep BS 7671 knowledge with real trade pricing data, specialist agents for specific tasks, and integration with certificates and calculators. No general-purpose chatbot can match this level of trade-specific accuracy.

The practical approach: use ChatGPT or Gemini for general tasks, and use Elec-Mate AI for anything related to your electrical work. At £6.99 per month, Elec-Mate costs less than either ChatGPT Plus or Gemini Advanced — and includes everything else an electrician needs: certificates, calculators, training, and business tools. If costing and quoting is your priority, see our best quoting app comparison.
