Key Takeaways
1Consumer unit replacement in Coventry typically costs £400 to £800 for a standard domestic installation, covering labour, the new metal consumer unit, testing, and the Electrical Installation Certificate.
2Metal enclosures have been mandatory for all new and replacement domestic consumer units since January 2016 under Amendment 4 to BS 7671:2008, carried forward in BS 7671:2018+A4:2026.
3Consumer unit replacement is notifiable Part P electrical work. In Coventry this means using a registered competent person (NICEIC, NAPIT, or ELECSA) who self-certifies, or notifying Coventry City Council Building Control.
4Coventry has significant post-war housing stock including 1950s and 1960s properties that may still have original wiring and rewireable fuse boards — replacement of these is strongly recommended.
5RCD protection on all socket-outlet circuits is required under Regulation 411.3.3 of BS 7671. A modern RCBO consumer unit provides individual RCD protection for each circuit.

What Is a Consumer Unit?
A consumer unit — also known as a fuse box or distribution board — is the heart of your home's electrical system. It receives the mains electricity supply and distributes it to individual circuits throughout your Coventry property. It also contains the protective devices that disconnect circuits in the event of a fault.
Main switch — isolates the entire installation from the supply. Used by the electrician during work and by occupants in emergencies.
MCBs — miniature circuit breakers protect individual circuits against overcurrent. They are sized to the cable rating of each circuit (typically 6 A for lighting, 20 A or 32 A for sockets, 32 A or 40 A for cookers and showers).
RCDs and RCBOs — residual current devices detect earth leakage current and disconnect within milliseconds, protecting against electric shock. Under Regulation 411.3.3 of BS 7671:2018+A4:2026, RCD protection not exceeding 30 mA is mandatory on socket-outlet circuits.
Coventry has substantial post-war housing, particularly 1950s and 1960s council-built estates and private semi-detached properties, many of which retain original wiring and outdated consumer units. A significant proportion of these properties still have rewireable fuse boards or early MCB boards without RCD protection.

Signs You Need a Consumer Unit Replacement in Coventry
The following are the most common indicators that your Coventry property needs a consumer unit replacement. If an EICR has been carried out, C2 observations relating to the consumer unit will make replacement a legal requirement within 28 days.
Rewireable fuses — ceramic fuse carriers with wire fuses. No RCD protection, can be incorrectly re-fused, and typically indicate wiring that is 30+ years old.
No RCD protection on socket circuits — if your MCB board or split-load board has socket-outlet circuits without RCD protection, this is a C2 observation under BS 7671 Regulation 411.3.3 requiring remedial action.
Plastic consumer unit — non-compliant for any new installation since January 2016. If your unit was recently fitted and uses a plastic enclosure, it has not been installed to current regulations.
Frequent tripping or burning smell — warning signs of deteriorated components or overloaded circuits. An electrician should inspect the unit immediately.
Insufficient ways for modern demands — electric vehicle chargers, heat pumps, and additional circuits require spare ways in the consumer unit. Older boards often have no capacity for modern demands.

Metal Consumer Units — The Legal Requirement Since 2016
Regulation 421.1.201, introduced by Amendment 4 to BS 7671:2008 on 1 January 2016, requires that consumer units and similar switchgear assemblies in domestic premises have an enclosure made of non-combustible material. The only practical option is a metal enclosure. This requirement was carried through to BS 7671:2018 and remains in BS 7671:2018+A4:2026.
Arc fault containment — the primary reason for the metal enclosure requirement is arc fault containment. Loose connections, damaged insulation, or component failure within a consumer unit can produce an arc that generates intense heat. A metal enclosure contains this heat and prevents ignition of surrounding material.
Approved products — major UK manufacturers including Hager, Schneider Electric, Wylex, ABB, and Crabtree all produce metal consumer units that meet BS EN 61439-3 and carry the UKCA mark. Your electrician should supply a recognised brand from a reputable wholesaler.
Retrospective requirement? — the 2016 requirement does not force immediate replacement of plastic consumer units installed before January 2016. However, any replacement consumer unit in Coventry must use a metal enclosure, regardless of what was there before.

Consumer Unit Replacement Costs in Coventry (2026)
Coventry labour rates are competitive for the West Midlands region. The following costs reflect a complete consumer unit replacement including the metal consumer unit, all labour, testing to BS 7671 Chapter 61, Electrical Installation Certificate, and Part P self-certification via the competent person scheme.
1–2 bedroom flat or small house — £400 to £550. Typical Coventry apartment or small terraced house. 8 to 12 circuits. Includes dual-RCD or RCBO metal consumer unit.
3–4 bedroom semi or detached — £550 to £750. The most common Coventry housing type. 12 to 18 circuits. Typically half a day to a full day. Cost depends on circuit count and condition of existing wiring.
Large house or complex installation — £750 to £950+. Older properties requiring earthing upgrades, main bonding conductor replacement, or additional remedial work alongside the consumer unit replacement.
Included in all quotes — the new metal consumer unit (specified make and model), all labour, connection of existing circuits, main bonding verification, full testing, EIC with schedule of test results, and Part P notification via the competent person scheme.
Additional costs may apply if the electrician discovers that remedial work is required on the existing installation — for example, damaged T&E cable, missing main bonding, or inadequate earthing. These should be identified and quoted separately before work proceeds.

Part P of the Building Regulations requires that specified electrical work in dwellings is designed and installed to protect people from fire and electric shock. Consumer unit replacement is listed electrical work under Part P and must be notified.
Competent person self-certification — the simplest route. An electrician registered with NICEIC, NAPIT, ELECSA, or another approved scheme notifies Coventry City Council Building Control automatically on completion of the work. You receive a Building Regulations Compliance Certificate from the scheme. No additional fee to the council.
Building Control notification — if using an unregistered electrician, you must notify Coventry City Council Building Control before work begins and pay the relevant fee. The council will arrange an inspection on completion and issue a completion certificate.
Why it matters — a consumer unit replacement without Part P notification is a breach of the Building Regulations. When you sell your Coventry property, the conveyancer will request evidence of compliance. Retrospective regularisation may be possible but involves additional cost and potential disruption.

The Consumer Unit Replacement Process in Coventry
A compliant consumer unit replacement in Coventry follows the same structured process regardless of the size of the property or the type of consumer unit being installed.
Survey and circuit identification — the electrician identifies all circuits, checks earthing and bonding, and inspects the condition of accessible wiring. Any additional defects are noted and quoted separately.
Supply isolation and installation — the supply is isolated at the DNO cut-out. The old consumer unit is removed and the new metal consumer unit fitted. All circuits are reconnected. Main earthing and main bonding conductors are verified and resized if necessary (Regulation 544.1.1).
Testing — all circuits are tested to BS 7671 Chapter 61: continuity of protective conductors, ring final circuit continuity (where applicable), insulation resistance, polarity verification, earth fault loop impedance, and RCD operating time tests.
EIC and notification — the Electrical Installation Certificate (EIC) is completed with a schedule of test results. The competent person scheme notifies Coventry City Council Building Control. You receive the EIC and Building Regulations Compliance Certificate.
