Key Takeaways
1Consumer unit replacement in Wolverhampton typically costs £400 to £800 for a standard domestic installation, including parts and labour.
2Since 2016, Amendment 4 to BS 7671:2008 requires all new and replacement consumer units in domestic premises to have a metal enclosure — plastic consumer units are no longer compliant for new installations.
3A consumer unit replacement must be notified to Wolverhampton City Council Building Control as Part P electrical work, or carried out by a registered competent person who self-certifies.
4RCD protection is mandatory on socket-outlet circuits under Regulation 411.3.3 of BS 7671. A modern dual-RCD or RCBO consumer unit provides this protection.
5Rewireable fuses, old MCB-only boards, and split-load boards without RCD protection on socket circuits are all indications that replacement is overdue.

What Is a Consumer Unit?
A consumer unit — commonly called a fuse box or fuseboard — is the distribution board that receives the mains electricity supply into your Wolverhampton property and distributes it to individual circuits. It contains the main switch, overcurrent protective devices (MCBs or fuses), and residual current devices (RCDs or RCBOs) that protect both the wiring and the occupants.
MCBs (Miniature Circuit Breakers) — trip automatically when a circuit is overloaded or when a short circuit occurs. They can be reset without replacing a fuse wire. Each circuit in your home — lighting, sockets, cooker, shower — has its own MCB sized to the cable it protects.
RCDs (Residual Current Devices) — detect current leaking to earth (which can indicate a person receiving an electric shock) and disconnect the supply within milliseconds. Under Regulation 411.3.3 of BS 7671:2018+A4:2026, RCD protection with a rated residual operating current not exceeding 30 mA is required on socket-outlet circuits rated up to 32 A.
RCBOs (RCD/MCB combined) — provide both overcurrent and RCD protection in a single device. An RCBO consumer unit gives each circuit its own independent RCD protection, so a fault on one circuit does not trip other circuits. This is the preferred solution for new domestic installations.
Modern consumer units are significantly safer and more reliable than the rewireable fuse boards found in many older Wolverhampton properties. If your home still has a fuse board with ceramic or rewireable fuse carriers, replacement is strongly recommended.

Why Replace Your Consumer Unit?
Consumer unit replacement is one of the most impactful electrical improvements you can make to a Wolverhampton property. The most common reasons for replacement include:
No RCD protection — older MCB-only boards do not provide RCD protection on socket-outlet circuits. This is recorded as a C2 (potentially dangerous) observation on an EICR and requires remedial action, typically consumer unit replacement.
Rewireable fuses — ceramic fuse carriers with fuse wire offer no protection against electric shock and can be incorrectly re-fused with wire of the wrong rating. They are recorded as at least a C3 (improvement recommended) or C2 observation on an EICR.
Plastic enclosure — all consumer unit replacements since January 2016 require a metal enclosure. A plastic consumer unit installed after this date is non-compliant with BS 7671 Amendment 4 requirements.
Insufficient capacity — older boards may not have enough ways (circuit positions) for modern electrical loads including electric vehicle chargers, heat pumps, or additional circuits added over time.
Frequent tripping — an overloaded or aging consumer unit that trips frequently is a sign that the installation needs review. A qualified electrician can assess whether replacement is required.

Metal Consumer Units — The 2016 BS 7671 Requirement
Amendment 4 to BS 7671:2008, which came into force on 1 January 2016, introduced Regulation 421.1.201 requiring that consumer units and similar switchgear assemblies in domestic premises have an enclosure made of non-combustible material. In practice, this means a metal enclosure. This requirement was carried forward into BS 7671:2018 (18th Edition) and remains in BS 7671:2018+A4:2026, the current edition.
Why metal? — the requirement exists because consumer units can be the seat of an arc fault caused by loose connections, damage, or deteriorated insulation. A metal enclosure contains the arc and prevents it from igniting surrounding combustible material (including plastic enclosures themselves). Consumer unit fires have caused significant property damage and loss of life in the UK.
Scope — the requirement applies to all new consumer unit installations and any replacement work in domestic premises. It does not retrospectively require the replacement of plastic consumer units installed before January 2016, but any replacement consumer unit must use a metal enclosure.
Compliance — all reputable consumer unit manufacturers (Hager, Wylex, Schneider Electric, ABB, Crabtree) produce metal consumer units. Ensure the unit your electrician installs carries a CE or UKCA mark and meets BS EN 61439-3.
If a Wolverhampton electrician quotes to install a plastic consumer unit, this is a red flag. A plastic enclosure has not been compliant for new domestic installations since January 2016.

Consumer Unit Replacement Costs in Wolverhampton (2026)
Wolverhampton labour rates sit broadly in line with the wider West Midlands market — slightly lower than Birmingham city centre but competitive for the region. The following prices reflect typical 2026 costs for a complete consumer unit replacement including labour, the new metal consumer unit, testing, and the Electrical Installation Certificate.
Standard 1–2 bedroom property — £400 to £500. A straightforward replacement of an older MCB board or split-load RCD board with a modern metal dual-RCD or RCBO consumer unit. Typically 8 to 12 circuits.
3–4 bedroom house — £500 to £700. Most common domestic scenario in Wolverhampton. Includes 12 to 18 circuits, often an RCBO board or larger dual-RCD unit. Allow additional time if the existing wiring is older T&E (twin and earth).
Large house or additional remedial work — £700 to £900+. Properties requiring earthing upgrades, main bonding replacement, or with a high circuit count. Remedial work identified during the replacement (e.g., damaged cables) is quoted separately.
What is included — supply and installation of the metal consumer unit, connection of all existing circuits, main bonding check, testing of the installation, Electrical Installation Certificate (EIC), and Part P notification via competent person scheme.
These prices do not include rewiring of circuits, installation of new circuits, or upgrading the DNO cut-out and metering. If the incoming supply tails are deteriorated or insufficient for a modern installation, the electrician will advise on whether a DNO service upgrade is required.

A professional consumer unit replacement in Wolverhampton follows a structured process to ensure compliance with BS 7671 and Part P of the Building Regulations.
1. Initial assessment — the electrician inspects the existing consumer unit, identifies all circuits, and checks the earthing and bonding arrangements. They confirm the incoming supply is adequate and identify any immediate defects.
2. Supply isolation — the DNO (Western Power Distribution / National Grid Electricity Distribution) cut-out provides the point of isolation. The electrician works with the supply isolated. The power will be off for the duration of the replacement.
3. Installation — the old consumer unit is removed and the new metal consumer unit is fitted. All circuit cables are connected to the appropriate MCBs or RCBOs. Main earthing conductor and main bonding conductors are connected and verified for correct size (Regulation 544.1.1).
4. Testing — the electrician tests the installation in accordance with BS 7671 Chapter 61. Tests include: continuity of protective conductors, ring final circuit continuity, insulation resistance, polarity, earth fault loop impedance, and RCD operation time. Results are recorded on the schedule of test results.
5. Certification and notification — an Electrical Installation Certificate (EIC) is issued in accordance with Appendix 6 of BS 7671. The competent person scheme notifies Wolverhampton City Council Building Control on your behalf. You receive a Building Regulations Compliance Certificate.

Finding a Qualified Electrician in Wolverhampton
Consumer unit replacement is not a job to entrust to an unqualified person. The work involves live conductors, and an incorrectly installed consumer unit poses a serious risk of fire and electric shock. Use a registered competent person.
Check registration — use the NICEIC, NAPIT, or ELECSA online contractor search tools to find registered electricians in Wolverhampton. These schemes carry out regular technical assessments of member contractors and require evidence of qualifications and insurance.
Ask for evidence of qualifications — a consumer unit replacement requires a qualified electrician holding at minimum Level 3 NVQ/SVQ in Electrical Installations (or equivalent) and a current BS 7671 qualification (City and Guilds 2382 18th Edition).
Get written quotes — obtain at least two written quotes that specify the make and model of the consumer unit, number of ways, MCB/RCBO configuration, and whether Part P notification is included. Verbal quotes are not sufficient.
Avoid unusually cheap quotes — a consumer unit replacement quoted below £350 in Wolverhampton should prompt questions. A thorough job including proper testing and certification takes a skilled electrician most of a day. Prices well below market rate may indicate shortcuts on testing or non-compliant materials.
Wolverhampton City Council Building Control can advise on Part P notification requirements if you have any doubt. The competent person scheme your electrician belongs to will handle self-certification automatically, so you should not need to contact the council separately if using a registered electrician.
