BS EN 50174 Data Cable Installation — Practice for UK Electricians

Pulling Cat6 or Cat6a is increasingly part of the electrical first fix, not a separate "data" trade. BS EN 50174 is the installation standard that sits alongside BS EN 50173 and tells you how to physically install the cable so the link passes certification. Why BS EN 50174 Matters to a UK Electrician

On most commercial fit-outs in 2026, the same first-fix electrician who pulls the SWA also pulls the data cabling. The network integrator turns up at second fix to terminate and certify. If the link fails certification, the cost of rework lands on whoever pulled the cable — increasingly the electrical contractor. BS EN 50174 defines whether the install was done correctly, and it is the standard the certification engineer will hold you to when their Fluke DSX fails the link.

The standard has three parts. Part 1 covers specification and quality assurance. Part 2 covers installation practice inside buildings — the "how do I pull this without breaking it" content. Part 3 covers outside-building installations — direct-buried, ducted and aerial. For most UK electricians, Parts 1 and 2 dominate; Part 3 appears on campus links, car park ANPR, external CCTV and PV inverter telemetry.

BS EN 50174 vs BS EN 50173 — keep them straight

BS EN 50173 is the *generic cabling* standard — it defines the link (categories, classes, channel and permanent link models, topology, lengths). BS EN 50174 is the *installation* standard — it defines how the cable must be physically installed to deliver that link. The third leg is BS 7671:2018+A4:2026 — the 18th Edition Wiring Regulations. It governs the mains supply to the comms cabinet, protection of any mains cable alongside the data, and crucially Section 528 (segregation and proximity to other services). The network engineer certifies the data link, but the UK electrician signs the EIC and is responsible for BS 7671 compliance of every mains cable crossing or running alongside the data tray.

BS EN 50174-1 — Specification and Quality Assurance

Part 1 is the framework. It sets out the documentation a competent installer must produce, the quality plan agreed before work starts, and the acceptance criteria the client uses to sign off. It is the part most often skipped by sole traders and most often demanded by FM providers when they audit the install.

  1. Specification — client or consultant issues a spec stating the generic cabling standard (BS EN 50173-1 plus the relevant supplement), the category and class required, topology and fire performance.
  2. Quality plan — competence of personnel, traceability of materials (cable batch, connector lot), test equipment calibration and inspection during install.
  3. Installation — Part 2 (inside) or Part 3 (outside) practices, supported by method statements. See our electrical RAMS template guide for the safety planning side.
  4. Documentation — as-built drawings showing every cable route, labelling scheme, patch panel allocation and any deviation from the specification, signed by the competent person.
  5. Testing — every permanent link tested to the appropriate class, results saved against the labelled link ID.
  6. Handover — complete document pack to the client: specification, quality plan, drawings, test results, maintenance and warranty info.

Skipping documentation kills the warranty

BS EN 50174-2 — Installation Practice Inside Buildings

Part 2 is the part most UK electricians need open on the bench. It covers pathway design, mechanical handling, segregation from mains and support spacing. Headline rules:

  • Pathway selection — tray, basket, conduit, trunking, J-hooks or bridle rings, chosen on cable volume, future growth, fire compartmentation and segregation. Mixing data and mains in the same compartment is prohibited unless a barrier is fitted.
  • Cable selection — category must support the BS EN 50173 class required; fire performance must meet the CPR Euroclass demanded by the building (typically Cca-s1b,d1,a1 for UK commercial).
  • Mechanical handling — pull tension, bend radius, sag limits, and support spacing on tray (250-300 mm for UTP to control sag).
  • Segregation — physical or barrier separation from band II mains under BS 7671 Section 528 and the distances tabulated in BS EN 50174-2 (50 mm, 100 mm or 200 mm depending on screening factor).
  • Earthing — metallic containment carrying data must be earthed under BS 7671 to provide a defined reference for screened cables and discharge induced voltages.
  • Identification — every cable labelled at both ends with a unique link ID matching the as-built drawings and test result.

Pull Tension — The Silent Killer of Cat6a Links

Twisted pair performs because the twist geometry is precise — each pair has a specific pitch, and the four pairs have different pitches so they reject crosstalk into each other. The jacket holds that geometry. Pull too hard and the jacket stretches, pairs separate, twist pitch lengthens, and NEXT, return loss and alien crosstalk all degrade — permanently. The link still terminates, but fails certification at second fix and the cause is invisible to the naked eye.

  • Cat5e UTP — typical max pull tension 100 N (~10 kg-force).
  • Cat6 UTP — typical max pull tension 110 N (~11 kg-force).
  • Cat6a UTP — typical max pull tension 110 N (~11 kg-force).
  • Cat6a F/UTP or S/FTP — refer to datasheet; typically 110-160 N.
  • Cat7 / Cat7A / Cat8 — refer to datasheet; screening defines the practical limit.

110 N is deceptively small — roughly the force to lift a 25 kg bag of plaster. Two installers leaning on a rope through a busy ceiling void will routinely apply ten times that. The correct technique is a controlled pull with a tension-limited handle, lubrication where appropriate, and pulling through intermediate access points rather than 60 metres in one go.

Bundle pulling — multiplied risk

When pulling multiple cables, tension is shared unequally — the cable on the outside of the bend takes more load. Never bundle more than 24 Cat6a cables for a single pull, and use a swivel pulling head so the bundle does not twist and bind.

Bend Radius — During Install and After

Bend radius rules come in two flavours: the installed (no-load) radius and the during-installation (loaded) radius. The installed radius applies once the cable sits still on tray. The during-installation radius is the tighter limit at the moment of the pull, when the cable is under tension around a 90° bend — exactly when the geometry is permanently damaged.

  • Cat5e / Cat6 / Cat6a UTP installed bend radius — typically 4× cable diameter (~25-30 mm for typical Cat6a).
  • Cat5e / Cat6 / Cat6a UTP during-installation bend radius — typically 8× diameter (~50-60 mm for typical Cat6a).
  • Screened (F/UTP, S/FTP) — refer to datasheet. Larger radii apply (often 8× installed, 12× during install).
  • Multi-core fibre — refer to datasheet; typically 10× outer diameter installed, 20× during pull.

The "tight 90 at the back of the cabinet" is the most

The single most common defect that fails certification is a sharp 90° bend where the cable transitions from a basket tray into the back of a 19" rack, or from a tray down a riser into a wall box. Use a 100 mm sweep bend or cable management rings — never run the cable directly against the rear frame.

Segregation from Mains — BS 7671 Section 528 and BS EN 50174-2

BS 7671:2018+A4:2026 Section 528.1 deals with proximity to other electrical services — circuits of different categories shall not be contained within the same wiring system unless every cable is insulated for the highest voltage present, or each conductor is separated by a barrier, or a separate compartment of a wiring system is used. BS EN 50174-2 extends this with tabulated separation distances based on containment type and the screening factor it provides.

  1. Open separation — no barrier, no screening. Typical minimum between unscreened mains and UTP: 200 mm.
  2. Non-metallic barrier — separation reduced, typically to around 100 mm.
  3. Metallic tray with metallic divider — typically 50 mm or less depending on screening factor.
  4. Crossings — where data must cross mains, BS EN 50174-2 requires the crossing at 90°, not shallow.
  5. Shared compartment of multi-compartment trunking — only acceptable where the data cable is rated for mains voltage OR a metallic barrier separates the compartments.

When recording the installation method on the EIC or Minor Works Certificate, the BS 7671 reference is Section 528.1 — the UK electrician must cite this; the network certification report does not mention BS 7671. Mixed compartments without a barrier — non-compliant on

Running Cat6a alongside SWA mains in the same compartment of dado trunking without a metallic divider fails BS 7671 Section 528.1 AND the separation distances of BS EN 50174-2. Either fit the divider, run in separate trunking, or accept the link will fail certification and the EIC cannot be honestly signed.

Cable Tray Fill Ratio

Tray fill is a thermal and mechanical limit. Pack a tray too tightly and cables in the centre of the bundle cannot dissipate heat from PoE loads, temperature rises, insulation resistance drops, the link length-budget shrinks, and the bottom cables are crushed by the weight above.

  • 40% fill ratio — the common rule of thumb for UTP and S/FTP on basket or ladder tray. Total cable cross-section should not exceed 40% of tray cross-section.
  • PoE derating — under BS EN 50174-2 and the relevant TIA bulletins, large bundles carrying PoE++ Type 4 (90 W per port) require additional derating. See our PoE++ Type 4 90W installation guide.
  • Mechanical limits — even at 40% fill, do not stack more than 25-30 cables deep on basket without intermediate restraints, or the bottom cables will be permanently flattened.
  • Future capacity — design for 25% spare capacity at first fix. Pulling new cables through an over-filled tray three years later damages the existing links.

Estimating fill on the bench

Typical Cat6a UTP outer diameter is around 7.5 mm, so cross-section ≈ 44 mm². A 150 mm × 50 mm basket has 7,500 mm² usable area; 40% is 3,000 mm² — space for around 68 cables. The cable tray sizing calculator does this for any tray and cable category.

Spacing from Fluorescent Ballasts, Motors and Other EMI Sources

BS EN 50174-2 calls out specific EMI sources that require greater separation than the standard band II rules. Fluorescent ballasts, HVAC motors, lift motors, switchgear, induction heating, X-ray and MRI installations, and high-power radio transmitters all couple into nearby data cabling and shrink the SNR margin.

  • Fluorescent ballasts — minimum separation typically 130 mm; many specs round to 150 mm.
  • Small motors (HVAC, fan coils) — typically 300 mm where unscreened cable runs parallel for more than 1 m.
  • Large motors, lift motors, induction heaters — minimum 600 mm and ideally a metallic barrier.
  • Switchgear and transformers — 600-1000 mm depending on kVA; screening factor can reduce this.
  • RF transmitters (broadcast, marine, aviation) — site-specific; standard tables do not apply.

On commercial refurbishment, the most common EMI issue is fluorescent ballasts in older ceiling voids — the data tray routed straight through at exactly the wrong distance. The remedy is to route the data tray higher (above the luminaires), switch to a screened cable (F/UTP) with the screen properly earthed, or upgrade the lighting to electronic-ballast LED.

Earthing of Metallic Cable Trays and Containment

Metallic containment carrying data must be earthed for two reasons. First, under BS 7671:2018+A4:2026 Chapter 41 and Chapter 54, exposed-conductive-parts must be connected to protective earth so an earth fault on any cable contacting the tray is cleared. Second, BS EN 50174-2 relies on the screening factor of the tray to reduce segregation distance — that factor only exists if the tray is reliably bonded along its length and earthed at multiple points.

  1. Each tray section bonded to the next — manufacturers supply bonding straps or earthing braids; the bolts alone are not always reliable.
  2. The tray connected to the MET at one or both ends — long runs typically earthed at both ends to prevent earth potential differences inducing currents.
  3. For screened cabling, the screen earth strategy must be agreed — typically patch-panel end for office runs, or both ends for short PoE runs.
  4. The earthing arrangement documented on the as-built drawings under BS EN 50174-1 — an undocumented screened install is not formally compliant.

Single-bolt earth on a 30 m tray is not compliant

One M6 stud and an earthing tag at one end of a 30 m basket run does not deliver the screening factor BS EN 50174-2 assumes. Use manufacturer bonding straps between every section and bond to earth at both ends.

Crossings at 90° and Cable Supports

Where data must cross mains, BS EN 50174-2 requires the crossing at 90°. A parallel run accumulates coupling along its length; a perpendicular crossing presents minimum mutual inductance and is negligible. A shallow crossing at 30° looks like a parallel run for most of its length and is treated by the standard as if it were one.

  • Support spacing on horizontal tray — 250-300 mm for UTP to control sag.
  • Sag between supports — cable should not sag visibly; persistent sag bends below the installed radius and shifts pair geometry.
  • J-hooks and bridle rings — acceptable for short runs, sized to the bundle (50 mm or 75 mm for Cat6a) so radius stays above installed minimum.
  • Cable ties — only Velcro hook-and-loop or low-tension twist ties. Over-tightened plastic zip ties crush the jacket, deform pairs and fail return loss.
  • Vertical riser runs — support every 1.5 m, with strain-relief at the top so the riser weight does not hang on the patch panel termination.

Plastic zip ties on Cat6a — return-loss failure

The fastest way to fail certification on a perfectly pulled run is to zip-tie it tight against the basket every 100 mm. Switch to Velcro and the link passes.

Labelling, Documentation and Handover

Documentation under BS EN 50174-1 makes the install auditable, the warranty honourable, and lets the future moves-adds-changes team find the right cable to repatch. The headline rules are simple and consistently ignored on small jobs.

  1. Every cable labelled at both ends with a unique link identifier in a scheme defined at design stage. Printed sleeves, wrap-around laminated labels or engraved tags. Handwritten masking tape is non-compliant.
  2. Every outlet labelled with the same identifier on the faceplate, so user-end and patch-panel-end match.
  3. As-built drawings showing every route, cable, outlet, patch panel port and cabinet — updated to reflect what was installed, not what was designed.
  4. Test results — one per permanent link — saved against the link ID. The certification engineer supplies these from the tester; the electrical contractor retains them.
  5. Deviation log — any departure from the specification recorded with date, reason and approval.
  6. Maintenance and warranty pack — manufacturer warranty registration, re-test schedule, warranty contact.

Labelling consistency wins the rebid

On commercial fit-outs the labelling scheme is the most visible quality signal to the FM team. A well-labelled cabinet with matching outlet labels and an accurate as-built pack is what gets you invited back. Pathway Selection — Tray, Basket, Conduit, Trunking, J-Hook

BS EN 50174-2 does not mandate a specific containment type but sets out criteria for choice. Pathway selection drives capacity, segregation strategy, fire compartmentation and future flexibility.

  • Cable basket (wire mesh) — common choice for office and commercial. Easy to add to, easy to bond, good airflow. Limited screening factor, so Section 528 distances apply.
  • Solid steel tray — better screening, heavier bundles, robust in plant rooms. Heavier and more expensive.
  • Galvanised trunking with metallic divider — used where data and mains must run together (riser, dado). The divider provides the Section 528 barrier and screening factor.
  • Conduit (steel or PVC) — individual runs to outlets and fire-compartment crossings. Use access boxes for runs over 15 m.
  • J-hooks and bridle rings — efficient in ceiling-void runs, low cost, fast. Not for plant rooms or risers. Bundle size limited by hook size.
  • Underfloor (raised access floor) — flexible for office reconfiguration, but cables walked over by IT staff installing servers are routinely damaged.

BS EN 50174-3 — Outside Buildings

BS EN 50174-3 covers installation practice outside buildings — campus links, external CCTV runs, ANPR camera feeds, PV inverter telemetry, and the growing number of distributed building-services links that no longer terminate in a single equipment room.

  • Direct-buried — gel-filled or armoured construction, buried at least 450 mm under footways and 600 mm under carriageways, with warning tape 150 mm above the cable.
  • Ducted — twin-walled ducts in standard utility colours, with draw pits at bends and every 90 m or so.
  • Aerial — typically figure-8 fibre with integral catenary on a steel messenger. Wind loading, ice loading and clearance from LV overhead lines must be assessed.
  • Crossings of LV / HV cables — observe BS EN 50174-3 and local DNO requirements; DNO rules supersede where stricter.
  • Equipotential bonding — where a metallic-screened cable enters a building from outside, the screen must be bonded to the building earthing system at entry to control surge currents.

Outside-building installs also interact with the lightning protection system (BS EN 62305) and building earthing (BS 7671 Chapter 54). An external metallic-screened cable between two buildings can become a path for earth potential rise during a strike — mitigated by terminating the screen on a surge protection device at each entry.

Confirm the design class and category

Before pulling cable, confirm with the network integrator (or specification) which BS EN 50173 class is required (Class EA for Cat6a, Class FA for Cat7A, Class II for Cat8) and the matching category. This drives bend radius, pull tension, screening and fire performance — get it wrong and the entire pull is scrap.

Plan the pathway and segregation under Section 528

Lay out the containment so band II mains and data are segregated under BS 7671:2018+A4:2026 Section 528 — separate compartments, metallic divider in shared trunking, or the BS EN 50174-2 separation distances on open tray. Cross mains at 90°, never shallow.

Pull with controlled tension and protected bends

Use a tension-limited pulling head or measured rope so you do not exceed 110 N on Cat6a. Use 100 mm sweep bends, never tight 90s against a cabinet frame. Lubricate where needed and pull through intermediate access points rather than one long span.

Support, dress and segregate without crushing

Support cables every 250-300 mm on tray, use Velcro or low-tension twist ties (never tight plastic zip ties), keep sag minimal, and hold the BS EN 50174-2 separation from ballasts, motors and other EMI sources.

Bond and earth the containment properly

Bond every tray section to the next with manufacturer-supplied straps and earth the tray to the building MET at both ends of a long run. For screened cabling, agree the screen earthing strategy with the integrator and document it.

Label, test and hand over the BS EN 50174-1 pack

Label every cable at both ends and every outlet faceplate with the link ID, update the as-built drawings, retain the certification test report against each link ID, log deviations, and assemble the handover pack. Without it, the 20-25 year warranty is unenforceable.
