Key Takeaways

  • 1Labour and materials should be separated clearly so the client can see where the money is going.
  • 2Partial rewires often need more labour than people expect because of access, containment, testing, and making good.
  • 3Materials are only one part of the price. Time on site, protection work, and finishing details can change the final number quickly.
  • 4A clear quote is easier to trust when the scope, allowances, and exclusions are easy to see.
  • 5Elec-Mate helps keep the pricing, invoice, and job details together from first quote to final handover.

What labour and materials really cover

On a partial rewire, materials are only part of the cost. Labour covers the time to strip out, run new circuits, make good, test, clean up, and deal with the awkward parts of the job that never show up in a parts list.

That is why two jobs that look similar on paper can land very differently in practice. The materials may be close, but the labour can swing a lot depending on access, floor type, finish level, and how much of the existing installation must stay live while the work happens.

How to split the price clearly

  • Show the labour line so the client can see the time element of the job.
  • Show the materials line so the cost of board gear, cable, accessories, and sundries is visible.
  • Add any allowances for making good, access, or extra testing if the job is not fully defined yet.
  • State what is included and what is excluded so the quote does not need a long follow-up conversation later.
03 · Guide

What usually changes the labour cost

A partial rewire can become expensive because the labour grows even when the materials stay steady. Tight access, older construction, plaster repair, moving furniture, occupied properties, and careful protection of finished areas all add time.

If you need a broader comparison point, partial rewire cost guide is a useful companion page.

04 · Guide

Why materials are easy to underprice

Materials are often the simplest part to list, which is why they are sometimes underpriced. Boards, protective devices, cable, accessories, labels, and consumables can add up quickly once the scope is properly written out.

If the job also involves a consumer unit change, it may help to compare the figures with a consumer unit replacement cost page so the client can understand where the extra spend comes from.

Keep the invoice and handover aligned

The quote should flow into the invoice without the numbers changing shape halfway through the job. That is easier when the labour and materials are recorded properly from the start and the scope is clear enough to stand up later.

Useful when the job needs to be priced and billed cleanly

For a fuller cost comparison, rewire cost UK is a helpful reference. If you need to turn the figures into a live quote or final invoice, electrical quoting and the electrician invoice app keep the job moving.

Pricing a partial rewire honestly

Partial rewires are where most quotes go wrong, and where most electricians get caught short. The job sounds smaller than a full rewire, so the quote starts smaller — but the access work, the chasing, the patching, and the testing are all the same per circuit. Halving the price of a rewire to do "half the work" rarely covers the actual time.

The honest way to price a partial rewire is to break it down by circuit, then add a fixed access and reinstatement allowance. A two-circuit partial in an occupied house is usually a 2-3 day job once protection, lifting boards, chasing, replastering, and certification are all costed in. Quote that fairly and the customer respects the number. Quote it as "half of £4,000" and you will lose money on every job.

  • Price per circuit, not per square metre — every circuit is its own testing + certification cycle.
  • Add a fixed access allowance (carpets up, boards lifted, plaster cut + made good) — never absorb it.
  • Quote certification time separately — EIC + schedule of test results is its own deliverable.
  • Build a contingency for unforeseen work (asbestos, old wiring, missing earths) — 10-15% is normal.
