What Is a Consumer Unit?

A consumer unit — also called a fuse box or distribution board — is the electrical distribution centre for your Brighton property. Signs You Need a Consumer Unit Replacement in Brighton

Metal Consumer Units — Mandatory for All Domestic Replacements Since 2016

Regulation 421.1.201, introduced by Amendment 4 to BS 7671:2008 and effective from 1 January 2016, requires all consumer units and similar switchgear in domestic premises to have a non-combustible (metal) enclosure. This requirement is unchanged in BS 7671:2018+A4:2026 — the current edition of the wiring regulations. Every consumer unit replacement in Brighton must comply.

  • Why metal is required — arc faults within a consumer unit generate intense heat capable of igniting a plastic enclosure and spreading fire to surrounding material. A metal enclosure contains the arc, preventing fire propagation. A series of fatal consumer unit fires in the UK prompted this change.
