Every employer in the UK must pay at least the national minimum wage to apprentices. The apprentice minimum wage rate is set by the government and reviewed annually. For 2026, the rates are as follows.

Year 1 (or under 19): The apprentice rate is £8.00 per hour from 1 April 2026. This applies to all apprentices under 19 regardless of which year they are in, and to apprentices aged 19 and over who are in their first year. On a standard 37.5-hour week, this works out at £300 per week before deductions, or roughly £15,600 per year.

Year 2 onwards (aged 19 or over): From the second year of the apprenticeship, if you are aged 19 or over, you are entitled to the national minimum wage for your age group rather than the apprentice rate. From 1 April 2026, this is £10.85 per hour for ages 18 to 20, and the National Living Wage of £12.71 for ages 21 and over. JIB apprentice rates are structured in stages that correspond to your progress through the apprenticeship. Under the JIB Industrial Determination, from 5 January 2026 the national standard rates are: Stage 1 £8.16 per hour, Stage 2 £10.60, Stage 3 £13.05, and Stage 4 £14.03. Work falling within the JIB London rate area pays more: £9.14, £11.88, £14.62 and £15.72 respectively. Year 1 at minimum rate (£8.00/hr, 37.5-hour week): Gross weekly pay of £300. At this level you are unlikely to pay income tax (the personal allowance is £12,570), and National Insurance contributions are minimal. Your take-home will be close to your gross — approximately £285 to £300 per week.

Year 1 at the JIB London Stage 1 rate (£9.14/hr): Gross weekly pay of approximately £343. After minimal tax and NI deductions, take-home is approximately £320 to £340 per week. This is a meaningful difference from the minimum rate and illustrates why JIB employers are attractive.

Overtime rates: JIB-registered employers pay overtime at defined enhanced rates. Weekday overtime (beyond normal working hours) is typically paid at time-and-a-half — so if your normal rate is £12.00 per hour, overtime is £18.00 per hour. Saturday work is also typically time-and-a-half. Sunday and bank holiday work is usually paid at double time — £24.00 per hour at the same base rate. Non-JIB employers set their own overtime policies, which may be higher, lower, or flat rate. Always clarify overtime rates before accepting an apprenticeship.

Travel allowances: If you are required to travel beyond your normal base location, many employers provide travel allowances. JIB terms include a distance allowance for travel beyond a specified radius from your base. Your apprenticeship agreement specifies your weekly working hours, which include both employer days and college days. If your contract states 37.5 hours per week and you work four days with your employer and one day at college, you are paid for all 37.5 hours. The college day is not unpaid leave — it is a core part of your apprenticeship that your employer has committed to supporting.

This arrangement is funded by the government through the apprenticeship levy (for large employers) or through co-investment funding (for smaller employers). Your employer receives up to £27,000 of government funding towards the cost of your training over the full apprenticeship.
