What the ECS Gold Card Is

The Electrotechnical Certification Scheme (ECS) is the UK’s industry-recognised competence card scheme for the electrical industry. The Gold Card is for fully-qualified electricians — distinct from the trainee blue / red / green cards. Holding a Gold Card is essentially mandatory for working on most UK commercial and industrial construction sites; site managers won’t let you on without one. It is administered by the JIB on behalf of the industry.

Requirements for the ECS Gold Card

You need: (1) A recognised Level 3 qualification — typically C&G 2365-03, 5357, 2357, 2366-03, or an EAL equivalent. (2) A recognised end-point assessment — the AM2 (or equivalent). (3) The ECS Health, Safety and Environmental Awareness assessment (~£25, 30-minute online test). (4) Photo ID and proof of identity. (5) Application fee (~£35-50). Apply via the ECS portal at ecscard.co.uk.

03 · Career Path

The Application Process

Submit your qualification certificates and AM2 evidence through the ECS portal. Wait for verification (typically 2-4 weeks). Sit the ECS H&S assessment online. Once verified, the card arrives by post within 7-10 working days. First-time application typically takes 3-5 weeks total. If you fail the H&S assessment, you can re-sit immediately for a small fee.

JIB Grading After the Gold Card

The ECS Gold Card confirms you are qualified. The JIB grading interview then determines your industry level: Approved Electrician (default for new Gold Card holders with AM2), Electrician (mid-career), Senior Electrician (with supervisory responsibility), Approved Senior Electrician (running teams). Higher grades carry higher JIB pay-scale entitlements — useful if your employer is a JIB member.

Renewal Cycle

The Gold Card is valid for 5 years. To renew: pay the renewal fee (~£35-45), confirm continued employment in the trade, and re-sit the H&S assessment. If you let it lapse for more than 12 months, you may need to re-submit qualification evidence. Set a calendar reminder 6 months before the expiry date.

Why It Matters for Your Career

Without an ECS Gold Card you cannot work on most commercial / industrial sites — site security simply will not admit you. JIB pay-scale entitlement (if your employer is a JIB member) requires it. Competent person scheme membership (NICEIC, NAPIT, ELECSA, Stroma) typically asks for ECS as evidence of competence. Many electrical contractors will not hire you to lead a job without one.

One App for Everything!

Elec-Mate is my go to app for business and electrical work. It's feature rich without feeling cluttered. A true all in one app for quotes, certs, calculations, RAMS, EICRs, and more. I use it every day without fail, and it makes my workflow much smoother since I'm not jumping between apps anymore. The price-to-feature ratio is excellent. Any issues I've had, the developer responds within the hour and usually fixes them the same day. 100% recommend.
