What tools do I need to be an electrician in the UK?

A UK electrician needs VDE 1000V insulated hand tools (screwdrivers, pliers, cutters, strippers), test equipment (a multifunction tester, a two-pole voltage indicator and a proving unit), cordless power tools (SDS drill, combi drill, impact driver) and PPE. The multifunction tester, voltage indicator and proving unit are the safety-critical core. A full professional kit costs roughly GBP 1,500 to GBP 4,000.

Key Takeaways

  • 1A professional electrician tool kit costs between GBP 1,500 and GBP 4,000 depending on brands and whether you buy new or second-hand -- the multifunction tester is the single most expensive item.
  • 2VDE 1000V insulated tools are a legal requirement for any work on or near live conductors (GN3 and the Electricity at Work Regulations 1989) -- never use standard tools for electrical work.
  • 3Your multifunction tester, voltage indicator, and proving unit are the three most critical items -- without them, you cannot test, certify, or prove dead safely.
  • 4Cordless power tools have largely replaced corded equivalents for electricians -- the time saved not dealing with extension leads and RCDs pays for the premium in weeks.
  • 5Calibrate your test equipment annually (or as specified by the manufacturer) to maintain accuracy, comply with scheme requirements, and ensure your test results are legally defensible.
  • 6When recording measured earth fault loop impedance (Zs), your reading must satisfy Zs(measured) ≤ 0.8 × (Uo / Ia) per GN3 Reg 1.16.9 -- the 0.8 factor corrects for conductors at operating temperature. Apply this check before marking a circuit as compliant.
  • 7BS 7671:2018+A4:2026 Reg 421.1.7 now requires Arc Fault Detection Devices (AFDDs) on socket-outlet final circuits up to 32 A in high rise residential buildings (HRRBs), HMOs, purpose-built student accommodation and care homes, and recommends them elsewhere. Verify that your test instruments support AFDD testing.

Essential Hand Tools for Electricians

Your hand tools are the foundation of your tool kit. They are used every day on every job, so quality and ergonomics matter. Buy the best hand tools you can afford -- they last for years and make every task easier and faster.

Core Hand Tools

  • Screwdrivers (VDE): Flat blade (2.5mm, 4mm, 5.5mm), Phillips (PH1, PH2), Pozi (PZ1, PZ2), and terminal screwdrivers. Wera, Wiha, and C.K. are the leading brands. A 10-piece VDE set costs GBP 30-GBP 60.
  • Pliers (VDE): Combination pliers (180mm or 200mm), long-nose pliers (160mm or 200mm), and water pump pliers (250mm). Knipex are the industry standard -- superior grip, leverage, and durability.
  • Side cutters (VDE): 160mm or 180mm diagonal cutters for cutting cable. Knipex high-leverage cutters are the most popular. Cost: GBP 20-GBP 40.
  • Cable strippers: A dedicated cable stripping tool (C.K. Jokari, Knipex ErgoStrip, or similar) speeds up cable preparation significantly. Cost: GBP 15-GBP 50.
  • Adjustable spanners: 6-inch and 10-inch adjustable spanners for conduit fittings, gland nuts, and accessories. Bahco are a reliable choice.
  • Tape measure: 5m or 8m tape measure. Stanley FatMax is the industry standard for durability and standout length.
  • Spirit level: Small torpedo level (225mm) for switch and socket alignment. A laser level is useful for longer runs.
  • Crimp tool: For crimping bootlace ferrules and ring terminals. Essential for terminating flexible cables.

Invest in a good tool belt or electrician's pouch for carrying your most-used hand tools on your person. This saves countless trips to the tool bag when you are up a ladder or in a loft. The C.K. Magma range and the Knipex tool pouches are popular choices among UK electricians.

VDE 1000V Insulated Tools

VDE insulated tools are not optional -- they are a safety requirement. The Electricity at Work Regulations 1989 require that adequate precautions are taken to prevent danger from live conductors. Guidance Note 3 (GN3) specifically recommends the use of insulated tools when working on or near live parts. Your competent person scheme assessor will check that your tools are VDE rated during inspections.

What makes a VDE tool different? VDE tools are manufactured with a multi-layer insulation process and individually tested to 10,000V AC. They are rated for continuous use at up to 1,000V AC / 1,500V DC. Each tool carries the VDE diamond symbol and the 1000V rating marking. The insulation is a hard-wearing plastic coating that covers the entire handle and extends as far along the shaft as possible, leaving only the working tip exposed.

Essential VDE Tool Set

  • VDE screwdrivers: Flat blade and Phillips/Pozi in common sizes. Most electricians carry 8-12 VDE screwdrivers.
  • VDE pliers: Combination, long-nose, and water pump pliers with VDE-rated handles.
  • VDE side cutters: Diagonal cutting pliers with VDE-rated handles. Essential for cutting cable near live parts.
  • VDE cable knife: A hooked or straight-blade cable knife with insulated handle for stripping outer sheath from T&E and SWA cable.

Inspect your VDE tools regularly for damage to the insulation. Any tool with cracked, chipped, or worn insulation must be replaced immediately -- compromised insulation provides no protection. Most VDE tools last 5-10 years with normal use, but replace them sooner if the insulation shows signs of wear.

The leading VDE tool brands are Knipex (pliers and cutters), Wera and Wiha (screwdrivers), and C.K. (complete ranges including cable tools). All offer excellent quality and are widely available from UK electrical wholesalers.

Test Equipment: The Heart of Your Kit

Test equipment is what separates a qualified electrician from someone who just connects wires. Without proper test instruments, you cannot verify that an installation is safe, you cannot produce an Electrical Installation Certificate, and you cannot carry out safe isolation. Your test equipment is the single most important investment in your tool kit.

Essential Test Instruments

  • Multifunction tester (GBP 600-GBP 1,200): Performs insulation resistance, continuity (low resistance), earth loop impedance (Zs and Ze), RCD testing, PFC/PSCC, and polarity checks. The Megger MFT1741, Fluke 1664FC, and Metrel MI3155 are the most popular models. This is the instrument you use for initial verification and periodic inspection.
  • Two-pole voltage indicator (GBP 60-GBP 150): Used to confirm the presence or absence of voltage as part of the safe isolation procedure. Must be a two-pole type (not a non-contact voltage detector, which is not suitable for proving dead). The Fluke T150, Megger TPT420, and Martindale VI-15000 are popular choices.
  • Proving unit (GBP 30-GBP 60): A device that generates a known voltage to prove your voltage indicator is working correctly before and after testing for dead. Used as part of the prove-test-prove sequence. Must be used with your voltage indicator.
  • Socket tester (GBP 15-GBP 40): A plug-in device that checks for correct wiring (live, neutral, earth), polarity, and earth presence in 13A socket outlets. Useful for quick visual checks but not a substitute for proper testing.
  • Non-contact voltage detector (GBP 15-GBP 50): A pen-style detector that indicates the presence of AC voltage without making contact. Useful for initial checks and tracing cables, but never rely on it for safe isolation -- always use the two-pole indicator.

Popular Multifunction Testers Compared

ModelIndicative priceBest known for
Megger MFT1741GBP 700-GBP 850Industry standard; widely supported and familiar to most UK electricians
Fluke 1664FCGBP 900-GBP 1,100Bluetooth wireless data download; saves time on large schedules
Metrel MI3155GBP 600-GBP 800Strong value; comparable performance at a lower price point

All three perform the same core tests: insulation resistance, continuity (R1+R2), earth fault loop impedance (Zs and Ze), RCD trip time and current, prospective fault current (PFC/PSCC) and polarity. Prices are indicative market guidance, not a quote.

Additional test equipment you may need depending on your work type includes a PAT tester (for portable appliance testing), an earth electrode tester (for installations with earth electrodes), a phase rotation meter (for three-phase work), a thermal imaging camera (for fault finding and energy audits), and a power quality analyser (for commercial and industrial work).

Zs Temperature Correction — GN3 Reg 1.16.9

When verifying earth fault loop impedance, your measured Zs must satisfy Zs(measured) ≤ 0.8 × (Uo / Ia) per GN3 Reg 1.16.9 and BS 7671 Appendix 3 — the 0.8 factor accounts for conductor resistance rising as conductors reach operating temperature. A circuit that looks compliant on a cold installation can fail this check at working temperature. Always apply the correction before recording a pass on your schedule of test results.

AFDD Testing Capability — BS 7671:2018+A4:2026 Reg 421.1.7

Under BS 7671:2018+A4:2026, Reg 421.1.7 has been redrafted. It is now a requirement to protect final circuits supplying socket-outlets with a rated current not exceeding 32 A using Arc Fault Detection Devices (AFDDs) in high rise residential buildings (HRRBs), Houses in Multiple Occupation, purpose-built student accommodation and care homes. For all other premises, the regulation recommends AFDDs for single-phase AC final circuits supplying socket-outlets not exceeding 32 A. Check that your multifunction tester or a supplementary instrument supports AFDD operation testing — not all older instruments do.

Power Tools for Electricians

Power tools speed up the physical work of electrical installation -- drilling holes, cutting chases, driving fixings, and cutting materials. The shift from corded to cordless power tools in the last decade has been transformative for electricians. No more trailing extension leads, tripping RCDs on client circuits, and searching for sockets on new builds.

Essential Power Tools

  • SDS rotary hammer drill (GBP 150-GBP 350): For drilling into masonry, concrete, and brick. Used for fixing back boxes, running cable routes through walls, and installing containment. 18V cordless models from DeWalt, Makita, and Milwaukee are the most popular.
  • Combi drill/driver (GBP 80-GBP 200): For drilling into wood, metal, and light masonry, and for driving screws. The most versatile power tool in your kit. 18V cordless is standard.
  • Impact driver (GBP 80-GBP 180): For driving screws and bolts with high torque. Faster and more powerful than a combi drill for fixings. Essential for cable tray, trunking, and containment work.
  • Jigsaw (GBP 60-GBP 150): For cutting holes in plasterboard, MDF, and wood. Useful for cutting holes for back boxes, consumer unit openings, and cable entry points.
  • Reciprocating saw (GBP 80-GBP 180): For cutting through walls, floors, and existing materials during alterations. Also useful for cutting metal conduit and trunking.

Choose one battery platform and stick with it. If you start with DeWalt 18V XR, buy all your cordless tools in that range so the batteries are interchangeable. Having four different battery types from four different manufacturers is inefficient and expensive. The four major professional platforms are DeWalt 18V XR, Makita 18V LXT, Milwaukee M18, and Bosch Professional 18V. All offer comprehensive ranges covering every tool an electrician needs.

Invest in at least 3-4 batteries and a fast charger. Running out of battery power on site is frustrating and wastes time. A 5.0Ah battery gives the best balance of capacity and weight for most tools. Keep your batteries charged overnight and carry a spare in your tool bag.

Personal Protective Equipment (PPE)

PPE is a legal requirement under the Personal Protective Equipment at Work Regulations 1992 (as amended) and the Health and Safety at Work Act 1974. Employers must provide PPE to employees, and self-employed electricians must provide their own. PPE is a fully deductible business expense.

Essential PPE for Electricians

  • Safety boots (GBP 40-GBP 120): Steel or composite toe cap, ankle support, slip-resistant sole. EN ISO 20345 rated. Replace annually or when damaged. Brands: Scruffs, DeWalt, Timberland Pro.
  • Safety glasses (GBP 5-GBP 25): EN 166 rated impact-resistant lenses. Worn when drilling, chasing, cutting, and any work generating debris. Clear for indoor work, tinted for outdoor.
  • Hard hat (GBP 10-GBP 30): EN 397 rated. Required on construction sites and any area with overhead hazards. Replace every 3-5 years or after any impact.
  • Ear defenders (GBP 10-GBP 30): EN 352 rated. Required when using SDS drills, chasing tools, and in noisy environments exceeding 85 dB. Foam plugs or over-ear muffs.
  • Dust masks (GBP 5-GBP 20): FFP2 minimum for general masonry dust. FFP3 for any work that may disturb asbestos-containing materials (common in pre-2000 buildings).
  • Work gloves (GBP 5-GBP 15): General-purpose gloves for handling sharp materials, hot surfaces, and rough cables. Consider cut-resistant gloves for SWA work.
  • Hi-vis clothing (GBP 5-GBP 20): Hi-vis vest or jacket. Required on construction sites and when working near roads or moving vehicles.

On commercial construction sites, you may also need site-specific PPE such as a harness and lanyard for working at height, face shields for certain operations, or flame-resistant clothing for hot work permits. Check site requirements before attending.

Budget Guide: What to Spend

Building a professional tool kit is a significant investment, but you do not have to buy everything at once. Prioritise the tools you need immediately and add specialist items as your work requires them.

Tool Kit Budget Tiers

  • Essential starter kit (GBP 1,500-GBP 2,000): Multifunction tester (mid-range), voltage indicator and proving unit, VDE hand tool set, combi drill and impact driver (cordless), basic access equipment, PPE, and a tool bag. Enough to carry out most domestic electrical work.
  • Professional kit (GBP 2,500-GBP 3,500): Everything above plus a premium multifunction tester, SDS drill, jigsaw, reciprocating saw, additional test instruments (PAT tester, earth electrode tester), premium VDE tools, and a comprehensive access equipment set.
  • Full professional kit (GBP 3,500-GBP 5,000+): Everything above plus specialist instruments (thermal camera, power quality analyser, 3-phase rotation meter), top-tier power tools, premium brands throughout, and duplicate critical items (spare MFT, spare voltage indicator).

Indicative Spend by Category

CategoryIndicative cost
Multifunction tester (single most expensive item)GBP 600-GBP 1,200
Voltage indicator and proving unitGBP 100-GBP 250
VDE hand tools (screwdrivers, pliers, cutters, strippers, spanners)GBP 200-GBP 500
Power tools (SDS drill, combi drill, impact driver, jigsaw)GBP 300-GBP 800
Access equipment (step and extension ladders)GBP 100-GBP 300
PPE, tool bags and sundriesGBP 100-GBP 250

Indicative market guidance for new equipment, not a quote. Buying second-hand power tools and tool sets rather than individual items reduces these figures.

All tool purchases are deductible business expenses. Under the Annual Investment Allowance, you can claim 100% of the cost against your taxable profit in the year of purchase. At the 20% basic tax rate, a GBP 2,000 tool kit reduces your tax bill by GBP 400. Track all purchases with the expenses manager and calculate the return on each investment with the equipment ROI calculator.
