VDE insulated tools are not optional -- they are a safety requirement. The Electricity at Work Regulations 1989 require that adequate precautions are taken to prevent danger from live conductors. Guidance Note 3 (GN3) specifically recommends the use of insulated tools when working on or near live parts. Your competent person scheme assessor will check that your tools are VDE rated during inspections.
What makes a VDE tool different? VDE tools are manufactured with a multi-layer insulation process and individually tested to 10,000V AC. They are rated for continuous use at up to 1,000V AC / 1,500V DC. Each tool carries the VDE diamond symbol and the 1000V rating marking. The insulation is a hard-wearing plastic coating that covers the entire handle and extends as far along the shaft as possible, leaving only the working tip exposed.
Inspect your VDE tools regularly for damage to the insulation. Any tool with cracked, chipped, or worn insulation must be replaced immediately -- compromised insulation provides no protection. Most VDE tools last 5-10 years with normal use, but replace them sooner if the insulation shows signs of wear.
The leading VDE tool brands are Knipex (pliers and cutters), Wera and Wiha (screwdrivers), and C.K. (complete ranges including cable tools). All offer excellent quality and are widely available from UK electrical wholesalers.
Test equipment is what separates a qualified electrician from someone who just connects wires. Without proper test instruments, you cannot verify that an installation is safe, you cannot produce an Electrical Installation Certificate, and you cannot carry out safe isolation. Your test equipment is the single most important investment in your tool kit.

All three perform the same core tests: insulation resistance, continuity (R1+R2), earth fault loop impedance (Zs and Ze), RCD trip time and current, prospective fault current (PFC/PSCC) and polarity. Prices are indicative market guidance, not a quote.
Additional test equipment you may need depending on your work type includes a PAT tester (for portable appliance testing), an earth electrode tester (for installations with earth electrodes), a phase rotation meter (for three-phase work), a thermal imaging camera (for fault finding and energy audits), and a power quality analyser (for commercial and industrial work).
When verifying earth fault loop impedance, your measured Zs must satisfy Zs(measured) ≤ 0.8 × (Uo / Ia) per GN3 Reg 1.16.9 and BS 7671 Appendix 3 — the 0.8 factor accounts for conductor resistance rising as conductors reach operating temperature. A circuit that looks compliant on a cold installation can fail this check at working temperature. Always apply the correction before recording a pass on your schedule of test results.
Under BS 7671:2018+A4:2026, Reg 421.1.7 has been redrafted. It is now a requirement to protect final circuits supplying socket-outlets with a rated current not exceeding 32 A using Arc Fault Detection Devices (AFDDs) in high rise residential buildings (HRRBs), Houses in Multiple Occupation, purpose-built student accommodation and care homes. For all other premises, the regulation recommends AFDDs for single-phase AC final circuits supplying socket-outlets not exceeding 32 A. Check that your multifunction tester or a supplementary instrument supports AFDD operation testing — not all older instruments do.

Power tools speed up the physical work of electrical installation -- drilling holes, cutting chases, driving fixings, and cutting materials. The shift from corded to cordless power tools in the last decade has been transformative for electricians. No more trailing extension leads, tripping RCDs on client circuits, and searching for sockets on new builds.
Choose one battery platform and stick with it. If you start with DeWalt 18V XR, buy all your cordless tools in that range so the batteries are interchangeable. Having four different battery types from four different manufacturers is inefficient and expensive. Employers must provide PPE to employees, and self-employed electricians must provide their own. PPE is a fully deductible business expense.
On commercial construction sites, you may also need site-specific PPE such as a harness and lanyard for working at height, face shields for certain operations, or flame-resistant clothing for hot work permits. Check site requirements before attending.
