Sample questions
01A customer says "you're useless, I want a different electrician". What is the best response?
- APromise the customer a different electrician on the spot, so as to calm the situation down before it escalates further
- BDefend yourself firmly and set out, point by point, why the work you have done is entirely correct and to the required standard
- CPack up your tools and leave the job straight away, without telling the customer or anyone back at your own office
- DStay calm, listen to the specific complaint, acknowledge their frustration, and fetch your supervisor — document the interaction afterwards
Why: De-escalate: stay calm, listen, acknowledge feeling (not necessarily agree), bring in supervisor. Document time, place, words used — protects you if it escalates further.
02A row breaks out between you and another trade over space in a riser cupboard. The best first step is to:
- AGet your own containment into the riser first, so that the other trade has to fit their services around it
- BDown tools and refuse to continue on the job until the other trade has cleared out of the riser cupboard
- CStep back, take a breath, and propose a quick joint look at the drawings with both supervisors to agree the sequence
- DReport the other trade to the HSE for obstructing your access to the riser while the site is live
Why: Conflict on site is usually about sequencing or co-ordination. Pause, get drawings, get supervisors, agree sequence — that's how the Principal Contractor expects it to be solved.
03A colleague is making jokes about your background that make you uncomfortable. What is the right response?
- ALaugh along with the jokes so that you fit in with the rest of the team and do not make things awkward for anyone else on site
- BTell them clearly the comments are not OK, and report it to your supervisor or HR if it continues — this may be harassment under Equality Act 2010 s.26
- CMake similar jokes back about the colleague's own background, so that they can see for themselves how it feels to be on the receiving end
- DSay nothing at all and keep away from the colleague, since making a formal complaint about it could damage your own reputation on site
Why: Equality Act 2010 s.26 defines harassment as unwanted conduct related to a protected characteristic. Tell them, report it, log it. The employer has a duty to act.
