Sample questions

  1. 01You need to isolate the supply in an occupied home. What should you do before switching off?
    • ALeave a note on the consumer unit and switch off
    • BSwitch off first, then explain if anyone asks why
    • CTell the occupier what will go off and for how long, and check nothing critical depends on it
    • DSwitch off at a time when nobody is likely to notice

Why: Informing the customer is step 2 of the safe isolation procedure in NET’s Pre-Assessment Manual, before you operate the isolator. It also lets the occupier save work on a computer, and lets you find out about anything that must not lose its supply, such as medical equipment, a freezer or an alarm.

  2. 02The occupier tells you a relative relies on electrically powered medical equipment. How do you plan the isolation?
    • AAgree a time with the occupier and keep that supply on or arranged safely before isolating
    • BGo ahead as planned; the equipment should have a battery
    • CRefuse to do the job at all
    • DIsolate only the circuits you can see the equipment is not on

Why: Talk it through with the occupier and agree how the equipment will be kept going, for example by timing the work or isolating only what is needed once you have identified the circuits. Never assume a battery will last, and never guess which circuit something is on.

  3. 03While fitting a new circuit you find something dangerous elsewhere in the installation (danger present). What should you do?
    • AFix it without telling anyone and add it to the bill
    • BIgnore it, as it is outside the work you were asked to do
    • CTell the person responsible at once, make it safe with their agreement where you can, and put it in writing
    • DMention it in passing at the end of the job

Why: BS 7671’s guidance on reports says items classed C1 (danger present) are to be made safe on discovery wherever practicable; where that is not possible the owner or user is given written notification as a matter of urgency. You do not walk away from a danger because it is not on your job sheet.
