Sample questions

  1. 01Part-way through a rewire you uncover board you think could be asbestos. Which order matches the HSE em1 steps for finding suspect material?
    • AStop work, take a sample yourself, sign the area, then report
    • BStop, warning sign, keep people out, report, sample or presume
    • CReport it, stop work, have it sampled, then put up a warning sign
    • DKeep people out, damp it down, carry on, then report it later

Why: em1 runs: stop work immediately, put up a warning sign, keep everyone else out, report to whoever is in charge, then have a sample analysed or presume it is the worst type of asbestos. Taking a sample yourself is tempting because it seems to speed things up, but breaking off material is a disturbance and sampling is arranged through the person in charge using someone competent. Reporting before you stop leaves the disturbance going on.

  2. 02You have stopped work on suspect material and need to put up a warning sign. What wording does HSE give for it?
    • ADanger: asbestos removal zone
    • BCaution: dust hazard, do not enter
    • CPossible asbestos contamination
    • DLicensed asbestos work in progress

Why: HSE’s em1 wording for the sign is ‘Possible asbestos contamination’. It says what you know: the material may be asbestos and the area may be contaminated. A removal zone or licensed work sign is wrong because nothing has been confirmed and no licensed work is under way, and a general dust sign does not tell people the hazard is asbestos.

  3. 03You unscrew an old fused spur and see grey board behind it. You have not drilled, broken or knocked it. Which situation are you in, and what is the aim?
    • AAn accidental release: decontaminate before you leave
    • BA discovery: take a quick sample so the work can go on
    • CAn accidental release: stop dust spreading and clean up
    • DA discovery: stop the material being disturbed at all

Why: em1 separates unexpected discovery, where nothing has been damaged yet, from accidental release, where dust or debris has already come off. You have not broken it, so this is a discovery and the aim is to stop it being disturbed at all. Taking a quick sample is the tempting wrong answer: sampling means breaking off material, which is the disturbance you are trying to avoid. The release options describe a situation you are not in.
