Sample questions

  1. 01An occupational hygienist suggests a test that shows how much of a substance has actually got into a worker’s body. What does HSE call this kind of monitoring?
    • AWipe sampling of surfaces
    • BBiological monitoring
    • CBackground air sampling
    • DA colorimetric screening test

Why: HSE describes biological monitoring as measuring how much of a substance has got into the body. Background air sampling measures the general work area, and wipe sampling shows contamination on skin or surfaces. HSE says screening methods such as detector tubes give indicators of exposure only.

  2. 02After a week of chasing in an occupied office, a firm wants to know how far the dust has spread onto desks and window sills. Which method does HSE describe for this?
    • AA lung function test for staff
    • BReading the product safety data sheet
    • CWipe sampling of the surfaces
    • DA personal breathing zone sample

Why: HSE describes wipe sampling of surfaces as a way to show how far contamination has spread. A breathing zone sample measures what one person breathes during the task, not what has settled around the building. A lung function test is health surveillance, and chasing dust has no safety data sheet.

  3. 03A firm follows HSE’s drilling task sheet in full: the right class of extraction, examined in date, checked by users, with the RPE the task needs. The work stays clean. Does regulation 10 demand air sampling?
    • AOnly if the firm has five or more employees on site
    • BYes, because silica dust has a WEL in EH40 Table 1
    • CYes, every dusty task needs air sampling at least once
    • DNot where control can be shown by another evaluation

Why: Regulation 10(2) says the monitoring duty does not apply where the employer can demonstrate by another method of evaluation that regulation 7(1) has been met. Following HSE task guidance in full, and checking it works, is how most electrical work shows control. Having a WEL does not by itself trigger monitoring, and five employees is the threshold for recording the assessment, not for monitoring.
