Sample questions

  1. 01You need to work on a lighting circuit in a shop unit. What does regulation 12 of the Electricity at Work Regulations mean by isolating it?
    • ASwitched off at the local switch so that the lamps go out
    • BDisconnected from the main supply but not any other source
    • CCut off from every source of supply, with that made secure
    • DTested at the fitting and found to show no voltage present

Why: Regulation 12 defines isolation as disconnecting and separating the equipment from every source of electrical energy, with the disconnection and separation made secure. A local switch only interrupts the circuit and is not isolation, and cutting off one source while another remains connected does not meet the definition. Testing is part of a safe isolation procedure, but a test on its own does not isolate anything.

  2. 02A colleague says regulation 4 of the Electricity at Work Regulations is only about how an installation is built. What else does it cover?
    • AThe design drawings handed over to the client when the job is complete
    • BWhich installations the principal contractor owns on site
    • CThe labels and charts fixed inside each distribution board
    • DThe way every work activity on or near a system is carried out

Why: Regulation 4 covers construction and maintenance of systems, and also requires every work activity, including working near a system, to be carried out so as not to give rise to danger, so far as is reasonably practicable. That puts the way you work inside the Regulations, not just the finished installation. Labels, drawings and who owns the system do not limit its scope.

  3. 03On a strip-out, plasterers and joiners are working near the existing wiring and could easily damage it. What does HSE advise?
    • APut warning tape along each cable that is visible
    • BIsolate the parts of the system they could disturb
    • CLeave it live so that any damage shows up quickly
    • DAsk the other trades to report any cables they cut

Why: HSE says that where refurbishment work by other trades is liable to disturb or damage the existing electrical system, the relevant parts should be isolated. Tape and a request to report damage leave the cables live while people cut and fix around them, and leaving them live so damage shows up means someone finds it by touching it.
