Sample questions

  1. 01A tracer shows light at the far end of every fibre in a new link. What has that check on its own proved?
    • AThat each fibre lands on the port in the records
    • BThat every fibre is inside its loss budget
    • CThat no fibre has a break somewhere along it
    • DThat the end faces are clean and undamaged

Why: Continuity tells you there is no break, and nothing more. Landing on the right port is tempting because the light did arrive, but a fibre can carry light perfectly and still be on the wrong port, which is what a polarity check against the records proves. Loss needs an insertion loss test, and end faces need a microscope inspection.

  2. 02A new premises fibre installation is ready for handover. Which three things are normally handed over for it?
    • AContinuity, OTDR traces and reflectance data
    • BContinuity, polarity and the drum test sheets
    • COTDR traces, return loss and the splicer estimates
    • DInspection, insertion loss and polarity results

Why: Short premises networks are generally tested three ways: connector inspection and cleaning, an insertion loss result for each fibre, and polarity confirmed against the drawings. Outside plant with spliced cables adds OTDR testing, which is why OTDR traces are tempting here. Continuity proves only that there is no break, and splicer figures are estimates.

  3. 03Eleven fibres in a newly spliced riser cable show light end to end, but fibre 7 shows none at the top panel. You have proved it dark and disconnected. What next?
    • AShoot fibre 7 from the top with no launch cord
    • BLoss test fibre 7 with a 1-cord reference first
    • CRe-terminate both ends of fibre 7 straight away
    • DVFL at the bottom, looking for a glow in a tray

Why: Put the VFL on fibre 7 at the bottom panel, open the bottom splice tray and look from the side for a glow at a splice or a crack in the loose fibre, then do the same at the top if the bottom is clean. A splice tray is exactly where a VFL works, because the fibre is exposed and close to the end. Re-terminating both ends is tempting but breaks into good work blind, a loss test on a fibre with no light tells you nothing new, and an OTDR always needs a launch cord.
