Sample questions
01A site manager says L74 is an Approved Code of Practice, so every line in it is law. What is L74’s real status?
- AHSE guidance; following it is normally enough to comply
- BA voluntary aid society manual with no link to HSE at all
- CA British Standard that kit suppliers have to meet
- DAn Approved Code of Practice with full legal force
Why: L74 is HSE guidance on the First-Aid Regulations. The first-aid Approved Code of Practice was withdrawn, so following L74 is not compulsory, but following it will normally be enough to comply with the law. It is not a British Standard and it is published by HSE, not a voluntary aid society.
02The owner of a new electrical firm contacts HSE asking to be told exactly what first-aid provision to make. What does HSE say about that?
- AHSE cannot say; there is no fixed level, so assess it
- BHSE fixes provision by the trade the firm registers in
- CHSE will send a standard pack that applies to all firms
- DHSE sets the provision once it has inspected the firm
Why: HSE says there is no fixed level of first-aid provision and that it cannot tell an employer what to provide. Each employer has to assess the equipment, facilities and people that suit its own work. HSE does not set provision by inspection, by trade or with a standard pack.
03A firm starts taking on work from mobile towers and stepladders. Which injuries does HSE’s hazard table link to work at height?
- AHead and spinal injuries, and fractures
- BDermatitis, hearing loss and eye strain
- CHeat stroke, dehydration and sunburn
- DMinor cuts, grazes and small splinters
Why: L74’s hazard table lists head injury, loss of consciousness, spinal injury and fractures against work at height. The first-aid plan has to be ready for those serious injuries, not only for small cuts and grazes. Skin, hearing and heat problems are not what the table links to falls.
