Sample questions
01A cable route passes through a plating shop where the cable will be exposed to corrosive chemicals all the time. Which Appendix 5 code describes that condition?
- AAD4, splashing water from any side
- BAG3, high severity impact from plant
- CAE4, light dust settling on it
- DAF4, continuous corrosive exposure
Why: AF is corrosive or polluting substances, and AF4 is continuous exposure, as in a chemical works. AD4 is tempting in a wet process area, but AD codes are about water, not chemicals. AE4 is light dust and AG3 is high severity impact, so neither describes corrosion.
02A new cable feeds a compressor on a skid that shakes noticeably in service. You have noted the AH class for the route. Which part of Section 522 do you read next?
- ARegulation 522.4, dust and solid bodies
- BRegulation 522.1, ambient temperature
- CRegulation 522.5, corrosive substances
- DRegulation 522.7, vibration of plant
Why: AH is vibration, and Section 522 deals with vibration in 522.7. The method is to read the code, then read the regulation that matches it. 522.1 is tempting because compressors run warm, but it covers ambient temperature, not shaking. 522.4 is dust and 522.5 is corrosion.
03A specification calls for BS 6724 armoured cable where the drawings showed BS 5467. What does the BS 6724 cable add?
- AAluminium wire armour instead of steel wire
- BLow emission of smoke and corrosive gases
- CA higher conductor operating temperature
- DCircuit integrity for a set time in fire
Why: BS 6724 is the same armoured XLPE family as BS 5467 with low emission of smoke and corrosive gases when affected by fire. Circuit integrity is the tempting answer, but low smoke does not keep a circuit working; that is the job of fire-resistant cable. Both standards run at 90 °C, so the temperature is unchanged.
Common questions
Is the Cables, containment and routing mock exam free?
Yes — 100% free, no sign-up needed. Questions are pulled at random from a substantial bank, with a worked explanation on every question after you submit.
Can I retake the mock exam?
Yes. Every attempt picks a different random selection and reshuffles the options, so each retake gives you genuinely new questions. No limit on retakes.
Does this count towards the real qualification?
No — this is independent practice material. To gain the actual qualification you need to sit the official assessment through an approved provider.
