Sample questions

  1. 01Which two sets of regulations each require a MEWP job to be planned?
    • ALOLER and the Electricity at Work Regulations
    • BPUWER and the RIDDOR reporting regulations
    • CThe Work at Height Regulations and RIDDOR
    • DThe Work at Height Regulations and LOLER

Why: A MEWP is a way of working at height and a machine that lifts people. WAHR reg 4 requires the work at height to be planned, supervised and done safely, and LOLER reg 8 requires a competent person to plan every lifting operation. RIDDOR is about reporting after an event, and the Electricity at Work Regulations cover electrical safety, not the planning of a lift.

  2. 02Your firm has a standard plan for relamping its own warehouse with the house scissor. Next week the same scissor is going to a client’s new building where nobody has seen the floor. What is right?
    • AUse the standard plan, as the machine is the same one
    • BNo plan is needed if the job takes under a morning
    • CPlan this job on its own, as it is not routine work
    • DUse the standard plan, as the task is still relamping

Why: HSE’s LOLER guidance allows a standard plan, reviewed periodically, for routine and similar lifting operations such as a MEWP used for general maintenance. A new site with an unknown floor is non-routine, so it is planned each time. The same machine or the same task does not make the site the same, and a short job still has to be planned.

  3. 03When should the rescue arrangements for a MEWP job be worked out?
    • ADuring the planning, before anyone goes up at all
    • BOnce the platform has stopped working at height
    • COnly when the job is due to last more than a week
    • DAfter the first day on site, if any problems have come up

Why: WAHR reg 4 makes planning for emergencies and rescue part of the duty to plan the work at height, so it is settled before the first lift. Working it out once the platform is stuck is too late, and the length of the job makes no difference: a one-hour lift needs a rescue plan too.
