Sample questions
01A trainer at a site induction says there is one correct lift that must be used for every load. What is HSE’s position?
- AThe full stoop is the one correct lift
- BThe deep squat is the one correct lift
- CThere is no single correct way to lift
- DEach firm must set its own single lift
Why: HSE says there is no single correct way to lift. It describes many approaches, each with merits for particular loads, situations and people, and gives principles to adapt rather than one fixed posture. HSE does not teach the deep squat as the one lift; it prefers a slight bend at the start of a lift to either a deep squat or a full stoop.
02You need to move a part-used box of fittings from the back of a store. You cannot tell how full it is. What does HSE suggest before lifting it?
- ALift it quickly so the contents do not shift
- BLook inside it or rock it from side to side
- CAssume it is half full and lift it one-handed
- DJudge it by its size and lift it in one movement
Why: HSE says that where how full a load is matters more than its size, you should look inside it or rock it from side to side before trying to lift it, and apply force gradually. A part-used box may not weigh what its size suggests. Lifting quickly makes the load harder to control and skips the check that would have warned you.
03A boxed item has no handles and is awkward to grip. What does HSE say about getting a good hold on a load like this?
- AHold it out in front so you can see it
- BPinch the top flaps of the box together
- CHug it close to the body where possible
- DGrip it hard with the fingertips only
Why: HSE says that where possible the load should be hugged close to the body, which may be better than gripping it tightly with the hands alone. Holding it out in front moves it away from the body and raises the stress on the lower back. A fingertip or flap grip is the opposite of a secure hold.
