Sample questions
01What written record does regulation 13 require of the check you make before using a tower platform?
- AA Schedule 7 report, made before the end of the day
- BAn entry in the site diary, made by the supervisor
- CNone, as regulation 13 asks for no written record
- DA signed tag, renewed before each person climbs
Why: Regulation 13 requires the surface and guard-rails of every place of work at height to be checked on each occasion before use, so far as reasonably practicable, but it does not ask for a written report of that check. Schedule 7 reports belong to formal inspections under regulation 12(4), tags are a useful supplement rather than a legal duty, and a site diary entry is a local choice. Every formal inspection under regulation 12, by contrast, must be recorded.
02Work on a tower starts at 8 am. Who should carry out the pre-use check before anyone works from it that morning?
- AThe site manager, at the weekly site meeting
- BThe competent person, on the seven-day visit
- CThe hire company, when it delivers the tower
- DThe first trained person going up that day
Why: The pre-use check is done by the trained people using the tower, because they are there at the moment of use: the first person up is the one doing the check, and nobody climbs assuming someone else has looked. A weekly meeting, a delivery or the competent person’s formal inspection all happen at other times and do not cover this morning’s use.
03A toe-board is missing from your working platform because someone borrowed it. A toe-board from a different maker’s tower is lying nearby and looks about the right size. What do you do?
- AGet the right maker’s toe-board fitted first
- BFit the other board and note it on the tag
- CFit the other maker’s board if it sits snugly
- DWork without it, keeping tools off the edge
Why: Putting a fault right means the manufacturer’s parts fitted the way the manual shows, and HSE guidance says never to use a tower with parts that do not belong together. A board from another tower may look right and still not fit or lock properly. Working without it leaves the platform short of its toe-boards, and writing the swap on a tag does not make the part compatible.
