Sample questions
01Partway through a build you find one diagonal brace still in the bag. With nobody on it, the tower stands square. What is the risk if it is left out?
- ANothing, as the platform catches hold the frames square
- BThe toe-boards will sit loose until the brace is fitted
- CThe castors can unlock, as braces hold the brakes on
- DThe frames can rack over once someone climbs or leans
Why: Diagonal braces stop the frames racking, leaning over into a parallelogram under load. A tower with a brace missing can stand square empty and rack as soon as someone climbs, leans or pulls on a cable. Platform catches stop a deck lifting off its hooks; they do not hold the frames square. Braces have nothing to do with the castor brakes or the toe-boards.
02What is the trapdoor in a tower platform designed for?
- ALowering tools to the floor without climbing down
- BFolding the platform flat whenever the tower is moved
- CClimbing up through the deck from inside the tower
- DVenting wind so the tower is less likely to tip over
Why: A trapdoor platform lets you climb up the inside of the tower and come through the deck, rather than climbing round the edge. It is also central to the through-the-trap build method. It is not a hatch for passing tools down, it does nothing to reduce wind load, and it is not a way of folding the platform for a move.
03Checking a brace you have just fitted, you see its claw is resting on top of the frame tube rather than closed round it. What does that mean?
- AIt only matters on the lowest brace of the whole tower
- BIt is fine, as the brace is still in the right position
- CIt is fine once a platform is resting on top of that lift
- DIt is not fitted; it must be snapped shut round the tube
Why: A brace only stops the frames racking when its claws have snapped shut round the tubes. A claw sitting on top of a tube is one of the easiest defects to miss and one of the most dangerous, because the brace can lift off under load. Being in roughly the right place, having a platform above it or being low on the tower does not make an unlocked claw safe.
