Sample questions
01Compared with a conventional installation, which three abilities mark a home out as smart?
- AIsolation, protection and fault monitoring
- BRemote control, linking and automation
- CStar wiring, data runs and a central panel
- DMetering, tariff switching and export control
Why: A smart home adds remote control (switching from a phone, voice or panel not wired to the load), linking (one thing reacting to another) and automation (things happening on a schedule or a trigger). Star wiring and a central panel are one way to build it, not what defines it. Isolation and protection are ordinary installation duties that smart control never takes over.
02The 2026 edition of Approved Document L adds ‘smart home controls’ to its key terms. When does that edition take effect?
- A1 October 2026
- B24 March 2027
- C6 April 2026
- D29 April 2024
Why: The 2026 edition takes effect on 24 March 2027; until then the 2021 edition is in force. 29 April 2024 is when the product security regulations came into force, which is a different law. The new key term describes control systems that talk to the building services and to on-site generation, storage and the grid.
03A customer’s smart lights work from the wall switches and the local hub shows every device online, but the app says “unable to connect” and the maker’s status page reports an outage. Which of the four parts has failed?
- AThe app, as it needs deleting and installing again
- BThe cloud, as the maker’s own service is down
- CThe devices, as the relay modules have lost their supply
- DThe hub, as it has lost the rules it was holding
Why: Place the fault in one of the four parts first. Devices that switch at the wall are powered, and a hub showing every device online is doing its job. A reported outage on the maker’s servers puts the fault in the cloud, which is not the electrician’s to fix. Reinstalling the app is tempting, but the app is only the window onto a service that is down.
