Sample questions

  1. 01A customer rings to add an EV charger to a quote you are delivering tomorrow. What is the best response?
    • ATell the customer that it is too late to change anything once the quote is already being delivered to them the next day
    • BAdd the charger to the quote at no extra cost, to keep the customer happy and win the wider job when you deliver it tomorrow
    • CFit the charger first and agree the price with the customer afterwards once it is installed and working properly
    • DAcknowledge verbally, immediately confirm in writing as a variation with cost and time impact, and do not start until the variation is signed

Why: Variations need a written record. A verbal yes followed by a written variation (email is fine) protects both parties. Never start unpriced work without sign-off — it kills jobs.

  2. 02When handing over a completed installation to a domestic customer, what must you give them?
    • AThe Electrical Installation Certificate, schedule of test results and the manufacturer's instructions / user guides for any equipment installed
    • BA copy of the construction phase plan, the firm's health and safety policy and its public liability certificate for the customer's records
    • CAn invoice and a receipt only — the Electrical Installation Certificate is lodged with Building Control and never issued to the householder
    • DOnly a verbal explanation of what was done, with the certificate and test results retained by the contractor until the final invoice is paid

Why: BS 7671 Reg 132.13 and the EIC sections require certs, test results and manufacturer information to be supplied to the person ordering the work.

  3. 03A landlord asks for the EICR result. The installation is unsatisfactory (C1 / C2 codes present). How do you communicate this?
    • AGive a verbal summary of the worst faults only, and withhold the written report until the remedial work has been quoted for and paid for
    • BSend the coded report straight to the tenants and the local authority first, leaving the landlord to work out the coding for themselves
    • CProvide the EICR, explain plainly which observations are coded C1 (danger present) or C2 (potentially dangerous), and the urgency to make safe
    • DRecord the installation as satisfactory and list the C1 and C2 items as recommendations, so the landlord can let the property immediately

Why: C1 = danger present, immediate action required. C2 = potentially dangerous, urgent remedial. Honest plain-English explanation protects the customer, the tenants and you.
